Chris Simms Reflects on NBC Departure and the Shift in 'Football Night in America'
Football · Words by Sam Neumann · Released
Chris Simms’ exit from NBC's 'Football Night in America' raises questions amidst significant show changes, as he reflects on his surprising departure.

Chris Simms, who dedicated seven years to Football Night in America, expressed his bewilderment following his recent exit despite consistently receiving high praise from NBC. The network's internal evaluations ranked him among the top panelists, which makes his departure in April ahead of the 2026 season difficult for him to understand.

Simms conveyed his feelings to Barrett Media's John Mamola, noting, “I did love doing it, and it kind of felt like it was coming that way. When they tell you you’re awesome on the show and grading higher than anybody every week, then you don’t get to go on the show in the future, you’re a little confused by it.” His departure signifies more than just a reshuffling of talent; it represents a broader strategic shift as NBC looks to rejuvenate its flagship pregame show.
Factors Behind the Shakeup
While Simms' performance was commendable, NBC evidently assessed multiple factors when redefining its pregame lineup. This transformation began with the exit of veteran analyst Tony Dungy, who confirmed in March that after 17 years, he would not return. Dungy mentioned that NBC desired a younger cast, yet he hinted that his outspoken beliefs may have influenced their decision as well.
This pattern continued as other notable names like Rodney Harrison and Jac Collinsworth also departed, prompting speculation about NBC's intent to refresh the show's image. The significant alteration was centered on the hiring of Mike Tomlin as the lead studio analyst. Tomlin, alongside notable talents like Maria Taylor, Jason Garrett, and Devin McCourty, represents a shift toward a more dynamic setup that features a traveling desk covering games from various stadiums each week. This new format inevitably left no space for Simms within the show's recalibrated structure.
Simms' Continued Presence at NBC
Despite his departure from Football Night in America, Simms remains a prominent figure within NBC's broader football programming. He continues to co-host PFT Live alongside Mike Florio, runs his own podcast Unbuttoned with Connor Rogers, and contributes to the college football studio broadcasts. Recently, he garnered attention for having to revise his views on an incident involving Oregon quarterback Dante Moore, demonstrating that he is still in the public eye and engaged with current football discussions.
Simms also shared his thoughts on Tomlin’s future in media. Although Tomlin has drawn positive reviews for his on-screen presence, Simms believes the lure of high coaching salaries will ultimately attract him back to the NFL sidelines. “I don’t see him staying long-term. He’s really good at it, but I think he’s a great coach. He’s a great leader of men. Also, the best communicator of any coach I’ve ever been in a locker room with,” Simms opined. He added that the financial incentives presently being offered to coaches could be too significant for Tomlin to dismiss if the right opportunity arises.
What's Next for Simms?
Looking ahead, Simms' own future with NBC appears uncertain as he approaches the latter part of his current contract. He expressed willingness to explore independent avenues if the opportunity arises, which could signal a potential shift in his career trajectory. “I wouldn’t rule out going independent if the right opportunity presented itself,” Simms shared, hinting at a possible pivot that fans and colleagues alike should keep an eye on.
The changing landscape of football broadcasting indicates a willingness among networks to shake things up, adapting to audience demands for fresh voices and formats. As Simms navigates this transitional phase, his insights could prove invaluable, shedding light on the dynamics of both on-field performance and off-field commentary in the evolving sports media climate.
With impending changes on both the show he left and his overall career, it’s clear that Simms' voice will continue to resonate in the football community, even if it plays out on a different platform. The road ahead will be fascinating, and football fans will likely remain engaged to see where both Simms and Tomlin ultimately land as their professional journeys continue.
