Davidovich Fokina Set to Make His Mark in Shanghai After Injury Comeback

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is making a bold statement to the tennis world: he’s ready to reveal his true potential as a player. After a frustrating two-month absence due to a debilitating back injury, the 27-year-old Spaniard is back on the courts, and he’s determined to let his performance do the talking.

In a recent interview in Shanghai, Davidovich Fokina reflected on his journey and what lies ahead. After moving into his fourth career ATP Masters semifinal, thanks to France's Arthur Gea being forced to retire in the first set due to injury, Davidovich Fokina shared his mindset. “I was thinking a lot about it with my wife and with my team, to see if I have 10 more years in my career, what I want to show to myself and what I want to show to the other ones,” he stated, emphasizing his desire for greater self-expression on the court.

2026 has proven to be a landmark year for Davidovich Fokina. He clinched his first ATP title on the grass courts of Mallorca and added another in Chengdu just three weeks ago. This not only marked the conclusion of a frustrating 0-5 run in ATP finals but also highlighted his growth as a competitor. Until then, the burden of previous narrow defeats had weighed heavily on his shoulders.

Demonstrating newfound poise and resilience, Davidovich Fokina has thrived under pressure in Shanghai. He managed to pull through in a pair of deciding-set tiebreaks against Frances Tiafoe, even saving a match point, before facing former champion Hubert Hurkacz, showcasing a mental toughness that many feared might have been compromised during his injury layoff.

Semifinal Showdown Against Zverev

Looking ahead, Davidovich Fokina prepares to face Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, aiming for his second Masters 1000 final and his first on hard courts. Although Davidovich Fokina has shown considerable improvement this season, this match will pose distinct challenges. Currently, he holds a 1-6 record against Zverev, having lost their last three encounters. The German, who has surged in form this year, recently celebrated winning his first two major titles and has solidified his hold on the year-end No.1 ranking.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. While Davidovich Fokina has proven capable of rising to the occasion in recent matches, Zverev presents a formidable opponent who has hit peak performance levels in 2026. Nonetheless, after missing the North American summer circuit due to a potentially serious back issue that almost culminated in a herniated disc, Davidovich Fokina is mindful of the opportunity before him.

The Road to Recovery

The mental grind of recovery has not been easy for the Spaniard. “Mentally it was very tough,” he explained, recalling the frustration he felt watching peers compete while he was on the sidelines. His physical challenges were equally daunting; he underwent MRIs that confirmed a back protrusion, which necessitated taking a step back from the sport.

“After I play Umag, didn’t go well for my back. After that, we decided to stop and recover,” he said, admitting he hoped to return for Cincinnati and the US Open. However, the reality of his physical limitations forced a more cautious approach. “I took off three weeks without tennis, doing only core and abdominal exercises, as I said, for the back.”

Now, back to full health, Davidovich Fokina’s determination to conclude his breakout season on a high note is palpable. He’s prepared to step onto the court against Zverev, motivated not only by the desire for victory but also by a need to affirm his growth as both a competitor and an individual. “I want to express myself, how I want to play, who I want to show to the world who I am,” he declared, resolute in his mission as he approaches this pivotal moment in his career.

This semifinal match against Zverev will be more than just a contest for a finals spot; it will serve as a testament to Davidovich Fokina’s resilience, evolution, and a vivid illustration of a player who, against all odds, aims to redefine his legacy in the world of tennis.
